Preparing Your Quilt for the Long-Arm Quilter

These guidelines will help me do the best possible job on your quilt.

Preparing the Top

  • Press the top, taking care to not distort the piecing.
  • Reduce bulk when possible.
  • Trim all loose threads from both the top and underside.
  • Remove any stray pins and recheck all seams.
  • Stay stitch a scant 1/4” from the raw edge of the quilt.
  • Quilt top needs to be square and all edges need to be even.
  • Check to make sure that borders fit properly without flaring and rippling.

Preparing the Back and Batting

  • Use high quality fabric for backing. Polyester blends and sheets are generally not recommended.
  • Backing needs to be straight and square with all edges parallel and even—no jogs from the piecing.
  • It is helpful to have a backing that will allow the use of the same color of thread for both top and bottom.
  • If using a Batik backing, launder the fabric at least once.
  • When piecing a back, remove selvages from seams.
  • Press seam open.
  • Press to remove all factory fold lines.
  • Backing and batting should be 6” larger than the quilt top. (3” per side)
  • Cut batting the same size as the backing. Edges should be square.
  • If using a rolled batting, remove batting from package, fluff in dryer, and then square up.

Backing and quilt top folded lengthwise and placed over a hanger or a large bag for storage
and transport.

Attach your name and phone number and any special instructions to the quilt top. Attach name and phone number to backing and batting as well. Indicate “top” if that is of importance and not obvious.
